Volleyball's Martinez Receives SEC Weekly Honor
BATON ROUGE — LSU volleyball player Elena Martinez was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
The New Orleans native helped lead the Tigers to a 2-0 record last week to capture their third straight SEC Western Division championship. LSU posted sweeps of Auburn and Georgia to win their second consecutive outright title.
On Friday against Georgia, Martinez broke the 21-year-old SEC single-season digs record, surpassing Shelley Gross of Georgia’s 655 digs recorded in 1986. She currently has 680 digs and needs only 34 more to break into the top 20 in single-season digs in NCAA history.
With 25 digs against Georgia, Martinez tied for the third most digs in a three-game match in LSU history. She followed that up with 19 digs against Auburn in the conference finale. For the week, the junior libero averaged an outstanding 7.33 digs per game with a total of 44 digs overall.
This is the second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor for Martinez in her career and the third of the season for the Tigers.
LSU will close out the season against Tulane next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Green Wave finished the regular season in second place in Conference USA and have been receiving votes in the national polls on and off during the year. Fans wearing Hawaiian shirts will receive FREE admission to the match. NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. The Tigers will be looking for their third straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
