Yepez Named LSWA Player of the Week
BATON ROUGE — LSU striker Rachel Yepez and LSU-Shreveport goalkeeper Kelsi McNew were rewarded for an outstanding weekend on the soccer pitch by being named this week’s Player and Goalkeeper of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Yepez has been named the LSWA Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime in LSU’s 1-0 shutout of Arkansas on Friday night, clinching the Tigers their first SEC Western Division crown in school history.
The sophomore from Fayetteville, N.C., also helped her team remain in the hunt for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as she wrapped up the regular season as the SEC’s leading scorer with 13 goals and 28 points on the year.
Yepez’s goal in the seventh minute of overtime was described by head coach Brian Lee after the match as being “the most important goal ever scored in the history of our program.” With the win, LSU also locked up the No. 4 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala.
McNew is this week’s LSWA Goalkeeper of the Week after leading the Lady Pilots into the NAIA Region XIII semifinals with a 1-0 shutout of 14th-ranked Auburn University-Montgomery on Oct. 30. Like the Tigers, the Lady Pilots also made history with the win as it was their first ever postseason victory in program history.
