BATON ROUGE — LSU All-American defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey has been named as one of four finalists for the prestigious Rotary Lombardi Award, the Rotary Club of Houston announced on Tuesday.
Dorsey, a senior from Gonzales, La., is joined on the list by Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis, Virginia defensive end Chris Long and Michigan offensive lineman Jake Long.
The winner of the 38th annual Rotary Lombardi Award will be named at the award’s dinner on Wednesday, December 5 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston. The Lombardi Award is given annually to the top interior lineman ? offense or defense ? who, in addition to displaying outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the character and discipline of Vince Lombardi.
The leader for the second-ranked and 8-1 Tigers, Dorsey has managed to accumulate 46 overall tackles this year, despite being double and triple-teamed on just about every snap. In addition to his 46 tackles, he has recorded 8.5 tackles for losses and five sacks.
He’s also batted down three passes and posted four quarterback hurries to lead an LSU defense that ranks among the top 10 in the nation in five categories, including a No. 2 rating in total defense at 234.67 yards per game.
On Monday, Dorsey was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after his seven-tackle, two-tackles for losses, one-sack effort in the win over Alabama.
In addition to his superior football ability, Dorsey is also a community in his hometown of Gonzales, taking time during the year to speak to students at the school’s he attended while growing up. Dorsey is also visible in the Baton Rouge community as he’s an active participant in LSU’s community service outreach program.
Last week, Dorsey was the SEC Community Service Player of the Week for his efforts in off-the-field activities during the past year.
Dorsey is the first LSU player since Ronnie Estay in 1971 to make the list of finalists for the Lombardi Award.
Founded in the weeks following the 1970 death from cancer of legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, the Rotary Lombardi Award has consistently delivered upon the mission set forth by Marie Lombardi when she granted the use of her late husband’s name. Her only stipulation was that all net proceeds from the event be donated to the American Cancer Society.
