Miles Briefs Media Following Tulane Win

BATON ROUGE — Les Miles held his Sunday afternoon session with LSU’s beat reporters following the Tigers’ 34-9 win over Tulane. The following is a transcript from Miles’ session with the media on Sunday:

On being ranked No. 1 in Associated Press
“We’re complimented by the votes. It also tells you the voters didn’t get up early in the morning to watch our game. They kind of slept in and got kind of caught up on the score later in the day. We can’t afford to play like that anymore for any length of time, whether it is a half or whatever. I can tell you that the compliment won’t do a thing to us. We played without the focus or intensity we are capable of. We understand it. We have a lot to fix. There will be none of our players who arrive here on Monday that feel like they have achieved any milestone in any way. It will be business as usual.”

On this weekend’s upsets …
“I knew that Kansas State had something by the way they played against Auburn earlier this year. I know the quarterback is pretty exceptional, and I knew they had ability. That was one that was probably most noteworthy to me. I like SC’s (Southern Cal) dynamic team. I believe they are under-represented right now. They should be first probably.”

On WR Brandon LaFell
“He got bruised. We expect him to play and to practice early this week. I think Early (Doucet) is day-to-day still.”

After reviewing the film …
“There is this much difference (Miles indicating less than a half-inch) from being ready to play and being average. I take the blame on this one. I will get it fixed. The amazing thing is you are how you play. That is a fact. We have to correct that. Our football team recognizes that. There are pieces of our football team that played extremely well and played extremely well for a major portion of our games. Don’t pretend that I don’t recognize that we have a good football team. Everybody in the locker room (at halftime) understood let’s start this game. In the second half, Matt (Flynn) looked pretty good throwing the football. The receivers caught the football. We ran the ball effectively. The defense continued to play. Special teams continued. I wish we would have done that the entire game.”

On the Auburn-Florida game …
“I thought they are awfully good. I watched an Auburn defense played inspired football for a long time. There one defensive end got hurt (Quentin Groves). They are a very, very talented football team, both of them. Auburn is much better than they were (earlier in the year).”

On Matt Flynn‘s status …
“He came out of the game pretty good, surprisingly. He got whacked enough. I don’t think there is anything more than bumps and bruises. There is nothing serious.”

On Florida quarterback Tim Tebow …
“He is a big, strong man. He is very competitive. I have a lot of respect for him. There can’t be a more marked guy in a Florida uniform. Everybody wants the quarterback anyway. Now, he’s a 12 to 20 snaps a game ball carrier. They do a good job blocking for him.”
