Men's Cross Country Second at Auburn; Women Eighth

AUBURN, Ala. — Against its most talented field of competitors this season, the LSU men’s cross country team posted a second-place finish at the Tiger Invitational on Saturday at the Indian Pines Golf Course. The Lady Tigers finished eighth among the 22-team field overall.

“I think both teams ran well,” said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliot. “We had some hard competition here and both teams turned in a good performance.”

The Tigers finished the day with 74 team points, while the Lady Tigers tallied 205. Florida swept the meet’s team titles, as the men recorded just 24 points and the women combined for 41.

Individually, the Tigers were once again led by junior Joseph Simuchimba who finished third overall after completing the 8K course with a season-best time of 23:56.93. Another Tiger near the front of the pack was senior Jacob Simmons who placed 11th overall after crossing the finish line in 24:41.73. Also scoring for the Tigers and placing among the meet’s top 50 were Elkana Chepsiror (23rd, 25:16.53), Alan Sticker (25th, 25:22.13) and Reuben Twijukye (32nd, 25:37.59).

On the women’s side, senior Kate Accardo led the Lady Tigers for the third straight week. Accardo finished 30th with a time of 17:54.07 over the 5K course. Seniors Lindsay Day and Megan Broussard followed with times of 18:21.41 and 18:28.90 to place 44th and 48th, respectively.

“The women are running up to their talent level as it relates to other SEC teams,” said Elliott. “I think Kate (Accardo) has solidified herself as one of the best runners on the women’s team, and we will look to her to lead.”

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will take next weekend off before returning to action Oct. 13, at the Chili Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
