Soccer Holds Position in Regional Rankings

BATON ROUGE ? The LSU soccer team has wrapped up its non-conference season and will head into its Southeastern Conference opener this weekend ranked No. 7 in the Central Region as it holds its position in the latest regional rankings released Tuesday.

The Tigers (6-1-2) find themselves at No. 7 in the Central Region for the second straight week in the latest poll released by Soccer Buzz Magazine, while they fall one spot to No. 8 in this week’s regional ranking released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The side is coming off perhaps its best result in the history of the program as it battled fourth-ranked Texas to a 2-2 draw in Austin on Sept. 18, marking the first time the Tigers have earned a positive result against a team ranked among the Top 10 teams in the nation.

The squad also shut out College of Charleston on Friday night by the final margin of 4-0 before suffering its first loss of the season with a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Davidson on Sunday.

With a draw against Texas on Tuesday night and wins over regionally-ranked Memphis and Miami earlier in the season, the Tigers find themselves in a position to earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament as they are currently ranked No. 39 nationally in the latest tournament projection released by Top Drawer Soccer on Tuesday.

LSU opens SEC play this weekend as it welcomes the Mississippi State Bulldogs to the LSU Soccer Complex on Friday in a match slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The squad follows with a match against the regionally-ranked Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday at 1 p.m. that is set for a live television broadcast as part of SEC-TV on Fox Sports Net.
