LaBauve Shoots 3-Under in Lady Tigers Debut
FRANKLIN, Tenn. — LSU freshman Lindy LaBauve opened her collegiate career with a 3-under par 69 Friday to lead LSU in the annual Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship being played here at the Vanderbilt Legends Course.
LaBauve, from Scottsdale, Ariz., had four birdies and just one bogey on the opening round card and is in a group tied for sixth in the low-scoring first round of the tournament. She is four shots behind individual leader Tiffany Joh of UCLA at seven-under 65.
The scores showed the depth of college golf as the top nine teams in the country are entered in this event and LSU, ranked 27th, shot what was their second best score of the young season, a 5-over 293, and still ended up only in a tie for 12th in the 17-team field.
The young Lady Tigers, playing four freshman for the first time in over a decade, came out even with the competition, playing holes 10-18 first in a team counting total of one-under par. But holes 1, 2 and 3 proved to be the sticking point in the round as LSU played those three holes in a combined seven-over par before playing holes 4-through-9 in one-under to get to the final total.
“We had a bit of a wait before we teed off on the front nine and I don’t know if that break caused us to lose our concentration for a bit or not,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “It shows what’s happened these days in college golf when we shoot five over and are in 12th. But it was very good round. We hung in there and kept ourselves from getting in too much trouble after that.”
Arizona State came on late in the day to take the first round lead with an eight-under score of 280, one shot better than UCLA with Arizona third at 283 and three-time defending national champion Duke in fourth at four-under 284.
The 54-hole tournament runs through Sunday and live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
