Lady Tigers Golfers Fifth Through 36 Holes in S.C.

HANAHAN, S.C. — The 27th-ranked LSU women’s golf team found the greens not as friendly on the second day of the Cougar Classic, falling from a tie for the lead to a tie for fifth after 36 holes of play on Monday.

But the Lady Tigers are still in a good position for a strong finish, just nine shots out of the lead. LSU followed a first-round two-under 286 with an 11-over 299 to stand at nine-over par 585 after the first two days. The Lady Tigers are tied with North Carolina State at 585.

Tennessee posted an even par round for the second straight day and leads the tournament at even-par 576 (288-288), three shots better than Notre Dame and five shots better than Texas. First-round co-leader with LSU, Alabama, is in fourth at eight-over par 584 (286-298).

LSU freshman Megan McChrystal birdied three of the last eight holes in her round Monday to shoot a two-under 70 and is one-under for the tournament at 143 (73-70). McChrystal stands in a group tied for seventh place in the individual competition four shots out of the lead of So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame at five-under 139 (70-69).

LSU on the second day also counted a 75 from senior Rebecca Kuhn, a 76 from Amalie Valle and a 78 from Caroline Martens. Valle who had a 69 on the opening day, is at one-over 145 in a group tied for 19th place.

“We just did not get as many putts to drop (Monday) as we did in the first round,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “But the girls continue to fight and hung in there and didn’t it let get away completely. We had a couple of bad holes, but we look forward to the challenge of the final round and seeing how much further we can move back up the leader board.”

The Lady Tigers had to count three double-bogeys as part of their total for the day.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with live scoring available at www.golfstat.com. LSU’s team will return to Baton Rouge Tuesday night and will go back on the road Wednesday afternoon for the Mason Rudolph Classic beginning Friday in Nashville.
