Movin' on Up: Football Gains Ground Polls

BATON ROUGE — A day after an impressive 48-7 win over then-No. 9 ranked Virginia Tech on national television, LSU picked up 20 more first place votes from the writers and an additional seven first place votes from the coaches in this weeks national rankings.

LSU remains ranked No. 2 in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25. Southern Cal is No. 1 in both polls as the Trojans have a total of 1,594 points in the AP poll, just 12 points ahead of the Tigers, and 1,476 points in the coaches poll, which puts them 39 points ahead of LSU.

Oklahoma, West Virginia and Florida round out the top five in the AP poll. The coaches poll has Florida ranked No. 3, followed by West Virginia and Oklahoma.

Other Southeastern Conference teams in the AP poll include: Arkansas at No. 16, South Carolina at No. 17, Tennessee No. 22 and Georgia No. 23.

Other SEC teams in the coaches poll include: Arkansas at No. 16, South Carolina at No. 23, Tennessee at No. 24, and Georgia at No. 25.

The Tigers have opened the 2007 season with a pair of impressive wins, beating Mississippi State, 45-0, in Starkville and then following that with the dismantling of Virginia Tech on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

LSU returns to action on Saturday when they host Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.
