Soccer Ranked No. 10 in Central Region

BATON ROUGE — After opening the season this past weekend with back-to-back shutouts against Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech, the LSU soccer team moved up one spot to No. 10 in the latest Soccer Buzz Central Region Top 15 released Tuesday.

The Tigers, who received their first ever preseason regional ranking at No. 11 a week ago, followed a dominating 3-0 shutout of Southern Miss on Friday with a 2-0 blanking of in-state rival Louisiana Tech on Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.

They did so in record-setting fashion by shattering the single-game attendance record on opening night with 1,828 fans passing through the gates, eclipsing the old mark of 1,689 who saw the Tigers take on SEC West rival Ole Miss on Sept. 30, 2005.

Four of LSU’s opponents also find themselves ranked in the latest Soccer Buzz Central Region Top 15, including No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Tennessee, No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 14 Ole Miss.

In addition, the Tigers face four opponents this season that are currently ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams. Texas is ranked as high as No. 4 in the Coaches Poll, while Florida is ranked No. 10 by Soccer Buzz, Tennessee is ranked No. 13 by the coaches and South Carolina is ranked No. 13 by Soccer America.

LSU returns to the pitch on Thursday as it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the Memphis Tigers at 5 p.m. It follows with a match against regionally-ranked Miami on Saturday at 5 p.m. as the Hurricanes are currently ranked No. 12 in the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
