Gymnastics to Host '08 NCAA Regional

BATON ROUGE — LSU was selected to host the 2008 NCAA Central Regional Gymnastics Championships, head coach D-D Breaux announced on Wednesday.

It marks the fourth time in seven years that Baton Rouge will serve as a regional site. The Tigers also hosted the Central Regional Championships in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The regional meet will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The top-two teams from the six-team field will advance to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., from April 24-26.

“It’s a huge honor to be selected as a host site for an NCAA regional,” said Breaux. “We have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to host this meet in the past and we are excited and looking forward to doing it again in 2008.”

This past season LSU traveled to West Virginia for its NCAA regional meet. Breaux is looking forward to facing a competition of that magnitude on the Tigers’ home floor.

“It’s always a tremendous advantage when you can host a regional,” said Breaux. “While the competition is tough and a lot is on the line you have the distinct advantage of being completely familiar with the competitive arena as well as having a tremendous fan base that is rooting you on to the end.”

Other regional sites for the 2008 season were awarded to Minnesota (North Central), Oklahoma (South Central), Florida (Southeast) and Oregon State (West). The site for the Northeast regional is still pending.
