No. 2 Falcon Set for NCAA Singles Tournament

ATHENS, Ga. — Megan Falcon of the LSU women’s tennis team will open play in the NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m. CT at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Falcon is the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Miami’s Audra Cohen in the No. 1 seed, while Melanie Gloria of Fresno State follows Falcon at No. 3.

Falcon’s first opponent will be Gloria’s teammate from Fresno State, freshman Renata Kucerkova. Kucerkova is 30-8 overall, boasting a 19-4 dual play record. The Czech Republic native is ranked No. 54 nationally.

“I think in singles Megan has put herself in a great position. Hopefully, she will come out and play with the same looseness and intensity that she has done all season,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “With the draw here, every round is tough, but as long as she remains focused she has a nice shot.”

Falcon is undefeated in the No. 1 slot in dual play at 24-0, boasting a 34-2 overall record.  From these accomplishments, Falcon earned honors as 2007 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and a member of the First Team All-SEC.

Falcon was a recipient of the Player to Watch Award for the Southwest Region. She was also named the National Co-Player to Watch, sharing the award with Northwestern University’s Gloria Rose, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today.

Falcon is the only seventh Lady Tiger to earn All-America honors. The last one came with Bruna Colosia in 2001.

Should Falcon defeat Kucerkova, she will face the winner of No. 30-ranked Catrina Thompson of Notre Dame and No. 56-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA in the round of 32 on Thursday, May 24.

Also on Thursday, Falcon will compete with partner Hannah Robinson in the doubles portion of the NCAA tournament. They will face Pennsylvania’s No. 59 Maria Anisimova and Kate Kosminskaya. The times for the doubles matches have not yet been announced.
