Sixty Student-Athletes Awarded Degrees

BATON ROUGE — LSU awarded a total of 60 degrees to its student-athletes on Friday as the University held its Spring Commencement at the Maravich Assembly Center.

Headlining the list of graduates were six Tigers who earned Master’s Degrees as well as six others who graduated with honors.

Kevin Ayer (swimming and diving), Lueroy Colquhoun (track and field), Brandon Hurley (football), Lauren Harvey (swimming and diving), Brandon Nowlin (football) and Rachel Taylor (swimming and diving) all earned their Master’s degree on Friday.

Hali Saucier from the swimming and diving team, along with Megan Duet from track and field, picked up the highest academic honors from the University, earning the distinction of graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Other student-athletes graduating with honors include: Lynley Roche (track and field) and Alex Rather (women’s golf) with Magna Cum Laude honors and Julie Nuemann (soccer) and Andrew Keane (swimming and diving) with Cum Laude honors.

One of the most decorated student-athletes in school history, Saucier capped her brilliant collegiate career by also being named a recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. She was also a finalist for the 2007 McWhorter Award, which goes to the top male and female student-athlete in the Southeastern Conference.

Saucier was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll four times during her career and she was also a member of the SEC Good Works Team. In the winter of 2006, Saucier received the highest honor of any female student-athlete at the University as she was named the Tiger Athletic Foundation LSU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Saucier put the finishing touches on her athletic career in March with first-team All-America honors in the platform at the 2007 NCAA Championships. She was a triple finalist at the 2007 SEC Championships, and she became the first LSU diver to win a regional title since 2003 when she captured the 3-meter springboard at the 2007 NCAA Zone B Championships.

Three starters for LSU’s No. 3-ranked softball team – outfielder and two-time All-America Leslie Klein, pitcher and 2006 All-America Emily Turner and starting catcher Kristen Hobbs – were also awarded degrees on Friday even though they were nearly 2,000 miles away in Palo Alto, Calif., preparing for today’s NCAA Regional contest against Fresno State.

Other notable graduates for the Tigers include: track’s Alleyne Lett, who holds the school record in the 60-meter hurdles and finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championships in that event back in February; men’s tennis’ Ken Skupski, who is a two-time All-American and ranked third in school history with 111 career singles victories; and volleyball’s Ivana Kuzmic, who earned All-America honors in 2005 at middle blocker after leading the Tigers to an NCAA appearance that year.
