Wells, Noonan Advance in US Open Qualifying

BATON ROUGE — Senior All-SEC performer Chris Wells and junior standout Brian Noonan advanced to the sectional qualifying round for the 2007 U.S. Open Championship on Wednesday as each earned one of four qualifying spots at Carter Plantation in Springfield, La.

Noonan fired a 2-under par 70 in the local qualifier at the David Toms signature course, while Wells posted a 1-under 71 and advanced to the next stage after defeating Dusty Smith of The Woodlands, Texas, in a one-hole playoff.

In addition to Wells and Noonan, former LSU standouts Billy Dressler and Andrew Lanahan also advanced to the sectional qualifying round with outstanding performances this week.

Dressler tied Noonan for first place at local qualifier at Carter Plantation on Wednesday with a matching round of 2-under 70, while Lanahan fired a 1-under par 71 on Monday to earn one of six spots at Timuquana Country Club in his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla.

Noonan is set to compete in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Dallas, Texas, while both Wells and Lanahan will look to earn a spot in this year’s championship as they head to Memphis, Tenn. The sectional qualifying round is scheduled to be held June 4 at sites yet to be determined.

All competitors who advance past the sectional qualifying round will earn a trip to historic Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., to compete in the U.S. Open Championship from June 14-17. This marks the eighth time that Oakmont has played host to the most prestigious event sponsored by the United States Golf Association.
