BATON ROUGE — The LSU Athletics Department honored its student-athletes for their community service activities for 2006-07 at the annual Spring Fling yesterday.
The event, which included food, music and karaoke, is meant to be a night of fun before finals week where the athletics department can honor the volunteer efforts of the Tiger student-athletes. As a department, LSU student-athletes combined for over 2,300 hours of community service during the academic year.
The gymnastics team was awarded the Shaquille O’Neal/CHAMPS Life Skills Community Service team award for the second consecutive season. The gymnasts logged just under 700 hours of community service during the academic year.
Individual honors went to Kelly Phelan of the gymnastics team on the women’s side and to Danny Bryan of the men’s tennis team on the men’s side. The pair received a Volunteer of the Year trophy during the awards ceremony.
