Track Teams Hold on to Top-3 Rankings

BATON ROUGE — After an impressive performance at the Penn Relays this past weekend, the LSU women’s track and field team holds on to its No. 1 ranking in the latest Trackwire 25, while the men’s squad is tied for the No. 3 spot in this week’s poll released Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers are the favorite to take home the outdoor national title as they are projected to score a total of 69 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. The Arizona State Sun Devils follow closely in the No. 2 spot with 65 points.

It is quickly becoming a two-team race for the national championship on the women’s side as South Carolina sits in a distant third with 37 points, while Auburn (35) and Southern California (31) round out the top five teams in the nation.

The Tigers hold on to their position among the nation’s top five squads in the men’s power ranking as they drop from No. 2 last week into a tie for the No. 3 spot with Oregon at 32 points.

Florida State is the top-ranked team in the nation for the fifth-straight week as the Seminoles are projected to score a total of 65 points at the national meet, while USC follows closely behind at No. 2 with 51 points and Auburn comes in at No. 5 this week with 31 points.

The squads are also ranked among the nation’s top five teams in this week’s U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 20 as the Lady Tigers drop from No. 2 to No. 4 and the Tigers remain in the No. 4 spot following their trip to the 113th Penn Relays in Philadelphia this past weekend.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers are set to kick off the championship season next weekend as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sam Bailey Stadium from May 10-13.
