BATON ROUGE — LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell and McNeese State defensive end Bryan Smith were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association college football players of the week announced on Monday.

Russell, who was also named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, rallied LSU in the final seconds to a 28-24 decision over No. 8 Tennessee, while Smith had a big night defensively in McNeese State’s 34-13 win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Russell connected with Early Doucet on a four-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds life to lift LSU to a 28-24 win over the Vols to cap a 15-play, 80-yard drive that covered seven minutes and 14 seconds as the Tigers rallied from a 24-21 fourth quarter deficit. The touchdown pass marked the seventh time Russell has led the Tigers to a victory in either the fourth quarter or overtime in his career. The junior from Mobile finished the game by throwing for 247 yards on 24-of-36 passing with a career-best tying three touchdowns.

Smith had a total of 12 tackles that included four tackles for losses of 16 yards in the win over SLU. He also had three quarterback sacks and broke up a pass. Smith, a junior from Newton, Texas, now has 11.5 sacks on the season, tying the school single season record.

Also getting votes this week for Player of the Week were Zac Champion of Louisiana Tech on offense and Quin Harris of Tech and LSU’s LaRon Landry on defense.
