Tigers Slip to No. 3 in Trackwire 25 Rankings
BATON ROUGE — After a week at No. 2 the Tiger track and field team slipped one spot to No. 3 in the latest Trackwire 25 rankings, released Tuesday.
Arkansas continues its hold on the nation’s No. 1 spot with 67 points. Florida edged LSU at No. 2 with 48 points to the Tigers’ 47. Stanford (37) and Arizona (36) round out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Individually, the Tigers are led by top-ranked quartermiler Kelly Willie. He also runs on LSU’s 4×100 team that is listed at No. 1 and the 4×400 squad that is ranked No. 2 in the country.
Joining Willie on those relays are senior Bennie Brazell and freshman Xavier Carter. Brazell is again ranked second in the 400-meter hurdles and Carter is listed at No. 2 in the 200 meters.
The Lady Tigers also have five athletes and two relay teams ranked among the country’s top 12.
Freshman Kelly Baptiste is the only Lady Tiger ranked in two events. She is 10th in the 200 meters and 11th in the 100 meters. Also ranked in the 100 is fellow freshman Ashley Owens who comes in at No. 4.
Both Baptiste and Owens run on the Lady Tigers’ 4×100 relay team that held steady at No. 6 this week. The Lady Tigers other relay, the 4×400, is ranked 12th.
LSU returns to the track this weekend when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the SEC Championships, May 12-15, at Vanderbilt Track.
