Soccer Sweeps Weekend with 3-1 Victory Over Nicholls State

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s soccer team defeated the Nicholls State Lady Colonels 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the LSU Soccer Complex. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back.

“It was a good win although I didn’t think we played very well today, but I attribute a lot of that to Nicholls play,” said LSU co-head coach George Fotopoulos. “I thought Nicholls play very hard inspired soccer today.”

Sophomore Stacy Bishop scored the first goal of the game in the 10th minute. Bishop took freshman Caroline Vanderpool’s cross and headed it into the goal pass the outstretched arms of the Nicholls State goalkeeper. In the 15th minute senior Artie Brown scored on the cross from Bishop. The goal is Brown’s third of the weekend putting her only seven goals back of the career record held by Jackie Cooper.

Sophomore Michelle De Cespedes scored the final Tiger goal in the 36th minute. From then on the Tigers held the Lady Colonels scoreless until Tori Priddy of Nicholls State squeaked one by freshman goal keeper Valerie Vogler in the 59th minute.

“We were able to get on them early, and obviously the goal given up in the second half was a bit unlucky for Valerie Vogler,” said Fotopoulos. “I think that put a little bit of pressure on us and changed the complexion of the game.”

The Tigers out shot Nicholls State 23-3 with 12 of the shots on goal. LSU also dominated Nicholls taking eight corners to zero corners for the Lady Colonels.

The LSU soccer team will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 3, as the Tigers play host to the Tulane Green Wave at 7 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex. The promotion for the game will be the “Crash the Wave” beach party.
