Gold Tops Purple in Scrimmage, 2-1

BATON ROUGE — The gold team, led by 10 kills and four blocks by transfer Ivana Kuzmic, defeated the purple team, 30-22, 25-30, 30-21, in an LSU volleyball intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday night in the Maravich Center.

The Tigers will open the season in Orlando, Fla., next Friday at 6 p.m. in the UCF Fall Classic against host Central Florida. LSU will also take on IPFW and Cleveland State on Saturday.

The purple team’s Lauren Leaumont, a Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team selection last year, led the match with 14 kills, followed by Regan Hood, also a member of the purple team and a second-team All-SEC selection in 2003, who had 11. Kuzmic recorded 10 kills for the gold team along with redshirt freshman Vanessa Freeman.

Sophomore Melody Clark led the team with eight blocks for the purple team. Daniela Romero recorded a team-best five blocks for the gold team, followed by Kuzmic with four. Sophomore Kassi Mikulik led the match with 13 digs for the gold team, while junior transfer Jelena Mijatovic led the purple team with 11 digs.
