Soccer Opens Season at Home Against Southeastern

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s soccer team is set to start the University’s athletic season and the team’s ninth season on campus when the Tigers take on in-state rival Southeastern La. on Friday at 7 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex.

“Along with Tulane, Southeastern is one of the top in state schools and we played them last year and they played us tough,” said co-head coach George Fotopoulos. “We have prepared for them and I expect a very good match out of them tomorrow.”

Friday’s match will mark the Tigers’ sixth contest against the Lady Lions of Southeastern, a series in which LSU leads 4-1. In the most recent matchup between the two Louisiana schools last season, the Tigers traveled to Hammond and beat the Lions by a count of 2-1.

The Tigers enter the 2004 season with seven returning starters and the one of the best recruiting classes of LSU’s nine-year history. Last season the Tigers finished10-9-1 and 2-7 in the SEC.

The 2004LSU soccer team is comprised of six freshmen, eight sophomores, four juniors, and five seniors. The LSU defense will feature three newcomers will junior transfer Holly Davis and freshmen Caroline Vanderpool and Elena Sutherland in the starting lineup.

“I am hoping that Robyn DesOrmeaux and Danielle Keath can play well for us and help us get a shutout,” said Fotopoulos. “We are paying a lot of new people on the back line and those two will have to step it up. I want a lot of excitement out of Artie Brown, and hopefully we will come away with a win.”

LSU owns a 7-2 record in season opening contests and the Tigers have won their previous six opening-day games. Last year, LSU defeated Coastal Carolina, 2-1, at home.

The Tigers face the Southeastern La. Lady Lions at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, at the LSU Tiger Soccer Complex.
