Patterson, Sprowl Named to Baseball All-Summer Team

BATON ROUGE — LSU outfielders Ryan Patterson and Bruce Sprowl were named Friday to the SEbaseball.com All-Summer League team. The team is comprised of players who excelled in collegiate summer leagues throughout the nation.

Patterson, a senior from Rowlett, Texas, led the Cape Cod League with a .327 batting average, earning the Thurman Munson Award as the league’s top hitter. Patterson, playing for the Brewster (Mass.) Whitecaps, collected 36 hits in 110 at-bats in the wooden-bat league with six doubles, five homers, 25 RBI and five steals.

Sprowl, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., was one of the top players in the Valley Baseball League, located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He was fifth in the league in hitting with a .340 (58-for-200) average, and he collected 13 doubles, six homers, 21 RBI and 21 stolen bases.

Two pitchers who transferred to LSU this summer — right-handers Edgar Ramirez and Chris Cahill — also earned summer league accolades, as they were named to Baseball America’s list of Top 10 prospects in the Coastal Plain League.

Ramirez, a junior who played two seasons at Florida International University, posted a 0.83 ERA and nine saves in 20 appearances in the Coastal Plain League, which sponsors teams in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. In 21.2 innings, Ramirez allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with three walks and 30 strikeouts.

Cahill, a junior who transferred to LSU from Florida Gulf Coast University, was 4-0 this summer with a 1.13 ERA and three saves in 21 appearances. He worked 24 innings, allowing three earned runs on 13 hits with seven walks and 37 strikeouts.

Patterson, Sprowl, Cahill and Ramirez joined their LSU teammates Friday in Alex Box Stadium for the 2005 Tigers’ first team meeting. Classes begin at LSU on Monday, when the squad will begin conditioning workouts and individual hitting and pitching sessions.

LSU’s four-week fall practice period, featuring intra-squad games open to the public, is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 27 in Alex Box Stadium.
