Moffitt Named SEC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU jumper John Moffitt completed the sweep of this year’s conference field event awards as he was named the SEC’s Outdoor Male Field Athlete of the Year Monday by the league office.
Moffitt was recognized as the conference’s Indoor Male Field Athlete of the Year in April.
Moffitt concluded a stellar career for the Tigers last month at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, winning the national title in the long jump. The title marked the second of the year for the Winnsboro, La., native who also won gold in the long jump at NCAA Indoor Championships. Moffitt is just the first athlete in Tiger track and field history to ever sweep the national titles in the event.
In addition, Moffitt shattered the school record in the long jump recording a distance of 27-2 1/2 at the national meet. Just the second 27-plus foot jumper in school history, Moffitt’s leap bettered the 14-year old record of 27-0 1/2 set by former All-American and NCAA champion Llewellyn Starks in 1990.
Also successful at the conference level, Moffitt finished among the top-four in both the long jump and the triple jump at the SEC Outdoor Championships and was twice named the SEC Field Athlete of the Week.
