Thirty-Four Student-Athletes Named to SEC Freshman Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 34 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2004 Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Thursday.

The LSU football team topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing eight players on the list, including running back Alley Broussard and tight end Keith Zinger. Seven members of the NCAA Indoor national champion Tiger and Lady Tiger track teams were named to the Honor Roll.

In addition, the women’s soccer team, including Louisiana Freshman of the Year Stacy Bishop, and the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, including NCAA Championships participant Christian Clausen, each added five members to the list.

The women’s golf team had three members on the Honor Roll, while SEC Freshman of the Year Brandon Bass led the two members from the men’s basketball team. All-SEC freshman team member Emily Turner was named to the list from the softball team, which advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series, while the women’s basketball team, which participated in the 2004 Final Four, the baseball team, which advanced to the 2004 College World Series, and the gymnastics team, which won the NCAA Central Regional, each placed one member on the Honor Roll.

A total of 427 freshmen student-athletes were named to the 2004 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. The University of South Carolina topped the list with 56 freshmen student-athletes on the academic roster. The University of Florida was close behind with 47 honorees. The University of Tennessee was next with 42 freshmen student-athletes honored.

The 2004 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2003-04 academic calendar.
