Fisher and Hazley Advance to Second Round
TULSA Okla. — LSU’s No. 13-ranked doubles team of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley edged North Carolina’s Nicholas Monroe and Geoff Boyd in the second set of Thursday’s NCAA Doubles Tournament first round to win the match and advance to the round of 16.
Fisher and Hazley took the first set, 6-4, but Monroe and Boyd kept the second one close throughout. The Tiger pair won a 9-7 tiebreaker to win the match.
“The other team raised their level of competition a lot in the second set,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “We found a way to give ourselves the lead and get the win.”
LSU faces Pepperdine’s Pedro Rico and Calle Hansen in Friday’s second round match. Rico and Hansen downed No. 4 seed Bryan Wilson and Phillip Stolt of Illinois in the first round.
Rico is still alive in the singles tournament also after upsetting No. 4 seed Catalin Gard of Ole Miss in the first round and moving past Georgia Tech’s Scott Schnugg in the second round.
“We watched them play today and they beat a strong team,” Brown said.
The doubles teams are scheduled to play not before 2 p.m. tomorrow, depending on Rico’s singles match, according to Brown.
