ATHENS, Ga. — LSU’s Jessica Ferguson lost Monday in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship tournament to Old Dominion’s No. 30-ranked Nataly Cahana, 7-5, 6-2.
Ferguson ended her college career with the loss. The No. 57-ranked senior finished the season with a 16-13 record. She played No. 1 singles this year for the No. 19-ranked Lady Tigers, who won the SEC Western Divison Title.
“Jessica had a tremendous year,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “This doesn’t take away from any of her accomplishments — she was SEC Player of the Week twice and she is ranked.”
Ferguson was just the fourth player in LSU team history to play in the singles tournament.
“She had about as big a turnaround from last year as any player in the country,” Minnis said.
Ferguson, who won just six dual matches in 2003, had eight wins over ranked opponents in 2004 at the No. 1 singles spot.
