Forty-nine Student-Athletes Graduate on Friday

BATON ROUGE — Rodney Reed and Randall Gay, two key members of LSU’s national champion football team, softball All-America Kristin Schmidt along with track and field All-Americans Marian Burnett and Levar Anderson highlighted a list of 49 student-athletes who graduated from LSU here on Friday.

The student-athletes, along with the other 3,000-plus LSU graduates, were treated to a commencement speech from President George Bush, the first sitting president to speak at an LSU graduation exercise.

In addition to his message to the graduates, which called LSU one of “America’s flagship universities”, President Bush also recognized the efforts of LSU’s national championships in women’s track and field and football.

“I know you’re especially proud of your mighty national champs, the finest athletes to wear the LSU jersey, the Lady Tigers of the women’s track team,” President Bush said. “Plus you have a pretty good football team too.”

Of the 49 student-athlete graduates, seven received their Master’s degree. The list of graduate school student-athletes include Wendell York (football), Lauren Cuyler (volleyball) and Charles Lee (golf) in business administration, Mandy Leach (swimming) in kinesiology, Blake Theriot (track) in public administration, Rodney Reed (football) in accounting, and William Tanner (swimming) in civil engineering.

Reed, a four-year starter at offensive tackle for the Tigers, graduated with a 4.0 grade point average in accounting. Reed, who recently signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons, is the first LSU football player to be named First Team Academic All-America twice.

Devon Day of women’s golf earned the University Medal after posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average in mass communications.
