Track and Field Teams Fall in Recent Trackwire Rankings

BATON ROUGE — Despite strong performances at last weekend’s SEC Championships both the LSU men’s and women’s track and field teams slipped one place to third and second, respectively, in the latest Trackwire 25 polls released Tuesday.

It marks just the second time this season the Lady Tigers have not been ranked No. 1 in the national poll as they also dropped to second during the week of May 4. UCLA moved into the top spot this week after winning the Pac-10 Championships over the weekend.

The women’s top five is completed by Texas, Arkansas and Nebraska.

In the men’s rankings, Arkansas remained atop the standings for a fifth straight week. Auburn jumped LSU to move into the No. 2 position and Florida and Ohio State round out the top five.

In the individual event rankings, the Tigers and Lady Tigers have a combined thirteen athletes and four relay teams listed among the top-12 this week.

The women’s 4×100-meter relay team is ranked No. 1 for a seventh straight week after claiming their third straight SEC title over the weekend.

Senior All-American Lolo Jones also maintained her position on top of the women’s 100-meter hurdle rankings for the seventh consecutive week. She completed the sweep of the SEC indoor and outdoor hurdle titles for a third straight season Sunday, winning the 100 hurdles in 12.83.

The LSU track and field team returns to action in two weeks when it hosts the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, May 13-16, at Bernie Moore Stadium.
