AUSTIN, Texas — LSU’s season came to an abrupt end Saturday when Arizona State handed them a 4-1 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The exit came earlier than expected for the No. 19-ranked Lady Tigers at the hands of 44th-ranked Arizona State. LSU finished one of its best seasons in recent history at 18-9.
“They (Arizona State) came out and looked hungry and focused,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “I give credit to them, but this was a very disappointing match.”
The Sun Devils’ 57th-ranked duo of Lauren Colalillo and Kady Pooler edged the Lady Tigers’ Lauren Seaman and Rocio Fantilli for the doubles point with a 9-7 win at No. 1.
Camila Caliari fell hard to Pooler at No. 6 singles, but Jessica Ferguson came through with a win over No. 95-ranked Josslyn Burkett at No. 1 singles to put LSU on the board.
LSU’s Lauren Seaman lost, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to Sabrina Capannolo. Arizona State’s Cindy Sureephong then clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) win at No. 3 singles.
Arizona State snapped a four-match losing streak with the win. They advance to play the winner of this afternoon’s Texas vs. Texas-Arlington match.
The Lady Tigers, who were making their tenth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, lost in the first round for the fourth consecutive year. LSU enjoyed a remarkable late-season run after a slow conference start that included an SEC Western Division title and an appearance in the SEC Tournament Semifinals.
“On a positive note we had a very good season,” Minnis said.
Ferguson, a senior, is not finished yet. She begins the NCAA Singles Tournament later this month in Athens, Ga.
LSU also returns five members to its starting lineup next season.
