Tigers at Home for NCAA Tennis First Round
BATON ROUGE — LSU will face Southern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. in W.T. Robinson Stadium on LSU’s campus.
The Tigers (17-6) are the top seed of four teams coming to Baton Rouge for the first and second rounds. If they can beat the Jaguars (10-12) they advance to play the winner of Saturday’s noon match between No. 14-ranked Rice and South Alabama.
“It’s one of your goals at the beginning of the year to host this event,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “Now that we’ve got it we want to do something in the tournament.”
LSU defeated Southern, 6-1, earlier this season. Southern finished the season as the SWAC Champions with a 10-12 record.
All matches this weekend will be broadcast by the LSU student media radio station, 91.1 KLSU FM.
“Southern has had another good year,” Brown said. “(Southern head coach) Jeff Conyers is continually building the program and getting a better product on the court.”
Some of the top players in the nation will be participating in the LSU regional, including the Tigers’ own 13th-ranked doubles team of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley and 30th-ranked freshman Ken Skupski. Skupski, Fisher and Hazley have led LSU to a top-15 ranking for most of the season.
Rice also brings the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the nation in twin brothers Richard and William Barker. Their top singles player, Robert Searle, is ranked No. 35.
South Alabama features 33rd-ranked junior Franticek Babej at No. 1 singles. Babej and David Kepka are ranked No. 51 in doubles.
“This is a chance to see some high level athletes who are possible stars of the future in a Davis Cup atmosphere,” Brown said.
Tickets are on sale now at LSUsports.net and at the LSU Athletic Ticket Office. Adult tickets are $5 and students and children’s tickets are $3.
