Lady Tigers Regain Top Spot, Tigers Hold at No. 2

BATON ROUGE — After slipping to No. 2 last week the Lady Tiger track and field team has regained its No. 1 ranking in the latest Trackwire 25 poll released Tuesday. The Tigers held steady at No. 2 for a fourth consecutive week.

The LSU women have been ranked No. 1 in 14 of the 15 polls released this season. This week they are followed by UCLA, who dropped back one spot to No. 2, Texas, Nebraska and South Carolina.

In the men’s poll, the Tigers trail No. 1 Arkansas. Florida, Auburn and Ohio State round out the top five.

Individually, LSU once again has three athletes and two relay teams ranked No. 1 in the country. Junior All-American Bennie Brazell is listed as the nation’s top 400-meter hurdler for a third straight week. He owns a NCAA-leading time of 49.19 in the event.

Indoor national champion John Moffitt retained his No. 1 ranking in the long jump. He leads the NCAA this season with a distance of 26-5 3/4.

For the women, Lolo Jones remains atop the 100-meter hurdles standings this week. She has posted the NCAA’s second-best time in the event this season (12.78).

Brazell and Jones are also members of LSU’s top ranked 4×100-meter relay squads. LSU, the defending national champion in both the men’s and women’s short relays, owns NCAA-leading times of 38.93 and 42.92, respectively.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this weekend, May 13-16, when they travel to Oxford, Miss., for the SEC Outdoor Championships.
