Lady Tigers in 13th, 12 Shots From Qualifying After Two Rounds

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — The LSU women’s golf team was able to move up in the standings, but not cut into the deficit for qualifying to advance after two rounds Friday of the NCAA East Regional Women’s Golf Championships at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort’s El Campeon course.

The Lady Tigers shot the eighth best score of the day, a 17-over par 305, a 14-stroke improvement from the team’s first round score as LSU moved from 16th place to 13th place in the 21-team field. After two rounds, LSU’s 22nd-ranked Lady Tigers stand at 48-over par 624. However, LSU was only able to pick up one shot on the eighth place score and the final qualifying position for the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships. Furman holds the eighth spot at 36-over par 612.

Also on the outside looking in after 36 holes is Tulane as the Green Wave posted a score 12 strokes higher than Thursday and at 38-over par 614 is tied for 10th in the competition with Auburn, another team which fell out of the top eight in the second round.

Southern’s Lady Jaguars also improved its score by 12 strokes in the second round and stands in 19th place at 662, 86-over.

The LSU team tried to pull off a strong rebound and got three of the scores it needed, but struggled to find a fourth counting score that would cut into the margin the team needed to make up. It was the veteran of the squad, junior Brooke Shelton, who followed a first-round 80 with an even par 72 to go to 8-over par 152 after two rounds. Shelton jumped from 61st place to a tie for 25th place in the individual standings.

Also making a strong improvement were the freshman twins Melissa and Nicola Eaton. Both shot 80 in the first round and gave LSU strong second round performances of three-over 75 to stand at 11-over 155 for the first two days.

LSU ended up having to count an 83 from sophomore Vicky Meyer who made a major recovery over the final nine holes, shooting one-over 36 after shooting 10-over 47 on the front side.

“To be honest we played like a very young team so far and you have to remember that most of them are very young,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We just couldn’t get the fourth score we needed to not get us into the top eight (Friday), but get us in position. We have to learn from this and see where we can finish on Saturday.”

Tulane’s Liliana Alvarez fell in the standings Friday after entering the round tied for second after a two-under 70. Alvarez posted a 79 in the second round and stands at 5-over 149 in a tie for 17th place.

Duke continues to be the runaway leader after 36 holes at 2-over 578, 16 shots ahead of UNLV. The rest of the qualifying teams entering Saturday’s final round are: North Carolina (+21), Florida (+29), Oklahoma State and Wake Forest (+31), Florida State (+32) and Furman (+36).
