BATON ROUGE — The Sun Belt Conference hitter of the week, Holly Tankersley, of Louisiana Lafayette and the Southeastern Conference pitcher of the week, Kristen Schmidt, earned this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors announced Tuesday.
This is the final of the weekly set of awards for softball players for this season.
Tankersley finished the weekend series with Western Kentucky 7-for-9 (.778) with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored. She hit a two-run home run and a two-RBI double to give her four RBI in the Cajuns 9-1 series finale win which clinched the 2004 Sun Belt championship. She ended the weekend with a 2.000 slugging percentage as she collected 18 total bases in just nine at bats (five of seven hits for extra bases). She hit three home runs to increase her season total to 16 and in the series finale, while getting a home run and four RBI, she also pitched, allowing just two hits over five innings.
Schmidt went 2-0 on the week with a 0.00 earned run average, a complete-game shutout and two wins over No. 20 Florida for the Tigers. Her first win of the week clinched LSU’s fifth SEC Championship in the last six seasons and the two wins gave her 12 victories this year over ranked teams.
