Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Spring Fling
BATON ROUGE — The LSU Athletics Department honored its student-athletes for their community service activities for 2003-04 at the annual Spring Fling last week.
The women’s soccer team was awarded the Shaquille O’Neal/CHAMPS Life Skills Community Service team award for the third consecutive season. The Tiger soccer team logged over 800 hours of community service during the academic year.
Individual honors went to Laura Klatter of the soccer team on the women’s side and to Kody Bumpous of the baseball team on the men’s side. This marks the second straight year the women’s award was presented to Klatter, who personally devoted more than 110 hours to community service this year. The senior from Geneva, Ill., was a member of the 2002 and 2003 SEC honor roll and tallied one assist and four shots in 2003.
A freshman pitcher on the nationally ranked Tiger baseball team, Bumpous recorded 28 hours of community service this year. He saw action during the fall intra-squad games, working 11.2 innings. The Ingrams Mill, Miss., native was elected to the Olive Branch High School Hall of Fame after earning first-team all-state honors in both baseball and football.
