Former Tiger Carter Signs With Gary Steelheads

GARY, Ind. — The Gary (Indiana) Steelheads have signed former LSU men’s basketball guard Maurice Carter.

Carter, a 6-foot-5 guard, was one of the last players waived by the Los Angeles Lakers this fall. He brings NBA, CBA and extensive minor league, and overseas experience to the Steelheads.

He played this summer for the Texas Rim Rockers of the United States Basketball League, where he was a teammate of Steelheads’ guard Jemeil Rich and center Leon Smith. At Texas, he averaged 28.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists in nine games. Prior to Texas, Carter played for the Yakima Sun Kings in 2002-03 and the Kansas City Knights of the ABA in 2001-02. He averaged 23.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 30 games.

The Jackson, Miss. Native averaged 15.5 points per game with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2001 Rocky Mountain Revue. He also played for the Lakers in 2002 in the Southern California Pro Summer League. He helped lead the St. Louis Swarm to the International Basketball League championship in 2000- 01 and was the finals Most Valuable Player.

In 108 games at LSU, Carter averaged 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists over four seasons.
