Former Tiger Pugh Named Assistant Coach at Southern
BATON ROUGE – Former LSU men’s basketball point guard T. J. Pugh has been named as a part-time assistant coach for the Southern University women’s basketball program.
Pugh joins the staff of Southern Coach Sandy Pugh (no relation) in a program that was 17-8 a year ago and has 11 newcomers and two returning players for the 2003-04 season. Pugh has been serving as an assistant principal at Capitol Middle School in Baton Rouge.
“He’s incredible,” Sandy Pugh told The Advocate about T. J. “The kids love him. He has a great feel for the game, having played for a legend in Dale Brown. He stepped right in.”
Pugh played two seasons at LSU in 1991 and 1992 and had 253 assists and just 112 turnovers, one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in school history. He had 196 assists in 1991, most of those to Shaquille O’Neal when he earned player of the year honors, and that number remains the second most in a single season in LSU history.
