Soccer Upset by In-state Rival Nicholls State, 2-1
THIBODAUX, La. — The LSU soccer team was stunned by Nicholls State 2-1 on Wednesday night at John L. Guidry Stadium in front of a crowd of 545.
The Tigers (9-8-1) lost their first game to an in-state team since the 1999 season. The Tigers had been 17-0-2 against Louisiana schools prior to Wednesday’s match. LSU lost for the first time to the Colonels, whom they are now 4-1 against. Nicholls State scored its first goals against the Tigers on Wednesday, having been shutout in all four previous meetings.
The Colonel’s took a 2-0 lead at the half and never looked back in the first game ever played under the lights at John L. Guidry Stadium. Nicholls State improved to 4-15 on the season. Samantha Bledsoe scored both goals for the Colonels, as each goal was unassisted. The Tigers cut the lead in half in the 89th minute as senior midfielder Stephanie Keating connected on a penalty kick to make it 2-1. Keating recorded her sixth goal of the season.
Nicholls State goalkeeper Lindsay Bartlett recorded 17 saves as the Tigers recorded an amazing 35 shots, with 18 of those shots on goal. LSU split time at goalkeeer as regular starter Robyn DesOrmeaux and freshman Heather Zurburg each played a half. The Tigers held NSU to just eight total shots and five on goal, but the Colonels made the most of their few opportunities to pick up the historical win.
The Tigers will hit the road to face the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks on Friday night in Fayetteville, Ark., at 7 p.m. for their final conference match of the season. LSU will honor its six seniors on “Senior Day” on Sunday versus Southern University at 2 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex.
