Tigers Picked to Finish First in SEC West
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference office announced the results of voting by members of the media gathered for the league’s annual basketball Media Day and the LSU Tigers of Coach John Brady have been picked as the pre-season favorite to win the Western Division.
The Tigers picked up 21 of a possible 40 first place votes and 205 points in the West to edge out Auburn with 10 first place votes and 181 points. Mississippi State (167) was third followed by Arkansas (107), Alabama (93) and Ole Miss (87).
In the Eastern Division, Kentucky received 22 first place votes and 223 points, edging our Florida by four points as the Gators received the other 18 points and 219 points. Tennessee (129) was chosen third with Vanderbilt fourth (119), Georgia fifth (87) and South Carolina sixth (72).
For the overall league championship, 21 voters picked Kentucky to win, with 18 picking Florida and one picking Mississippi State.
LSU senior forward Jaime Lloreda was chosen on the first-team pre-season All-SEC team joining Gerald Fitch of Kentucky, Matt Freije of Vanderbilt and David Lee and Anthony Roberson of Florida.
Timmy Bowers and Lawrence Roberts of Mississippi State, Justin Reed of Ole Miss and Kyle Davis and Marco Killingsworth of Auburn made up the second team.
In the voting for the preseason player of the year, Freije of Vanderbilt got 13 points, with Lloreda and Lee each getting 10.
The Tigers open the exhibition season on Thursday night, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Maravich Assembly Center against Global Sports. The regular season opens Nov. 21 in the Assembly Center against Southern University.
