Men's Tennis Set to Start Regional Championships
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The LSU Men’s Tennis team will open the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Thursday with two matches at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The five-day event features 164 singles players and 64 doubles teams from one of the toughest regions in the country.
LSU freshman Colt Gaston and senior Brandon Nicholson will kick off the weekend. Gaston plays University of Texas-Martin’s Olti Mollaymeri at 10:45 a.m. and Nicholson plays Ole Miss’ David Donaldson at 12:30 p.m.
The rest of the Tigers hit the court Friday. Ken Skupski, Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley received byes to the tounament’s main draw round of 32.
Cory Ross will see his first action of the fall season Friday. Ross has been injured but was one of the Tigers’ top players last season. He plays Matija Sulin of Georgia State at 8:15 a.m.
“This is a chance for Ross to get back in the rhythm of playing,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “If he gets wins that will be great, but we are just trying to get him back in the swing of things.
Doubles play also begins Friday. Brackets will be posted Thursday on the tournament’s Web site, www.tennisinformation.com.
