SAMARA, Russia (AP) — Silver Stars guard Marie Ferdinand scored 21 points to lead the WNBA Select team past Brazilian champion Sao Paulo FC 87-62 Wednesday at the Women’s Basketball World Cup.

The American team controlled the game from the beginning and led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.

The WNBA players pulled away even more in the fourth quarter, helped when Brazilian guard Palmira Marchal fouled out, and improved to 2-0 in Group A.

Cleveland forward Latoya Thomas had 14 points and nine rebounds for the WNBA Select team, and Phoenix forward Adrian Williams added 12 points.

Janeth Arcaine led Sao Paulo with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

In Group B, Ann Wauters scored 26 points in French champion US Valenciennes Olympic’s 89-68 victory over the Canberra Capitals.

The inaugural World Cup was organized by basketball’s international governing body, FIBA.
