Soccer Beats Mississippi State 2-1
BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team won its first Southeastern Conference match of the season as the Tigers defeated Mississippi State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The Tigers improved to 8-4-1 on the season and 1-3 in the SEC while the Bulldogs fell to 7-6-1 and 1-2 in conference play. The announced crowd of 735 is the largest for LSU at home this season and the fourth largest in stadium history. LSU improved to 7-2 all-time versus Mississippi State and have won five of the last seven meetings between the teams.
“Right now we are a desperate team with our backs against the wall which needed a win and we found a way to win today so I am pleased to get out first SEC win,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos.
LSU took the lead at the 30:45 mark in the first half as senior midfielder Stephanie Keating notched her third goal of the season, putting the Tigers up 1-0. Keating knocked the ball into the left corner of the net after it was deflected off of MSU goalkeeper Luisa Marzotto. Junior forward Artie Brown shot the ball directly into Marzotto and the ball deflected over to Keating who finished the chance.
Brown tied teammate Stacy Bishop for the team lead in goals with 10 as she took a pass from Keating a few yards shy of the goal and knocked it in to put the Tigers up by two. Brown now has 23 goals in her career.
Mississippi State cut the lead to 2-1 in the 81st minute as junior midfielder Kristin Peterson snuck the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Robyn DesOrmeaux with the assist credited to Elke D’Hollander. The LSU defense held Bulldogs in check for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
LSU will be in action next weekend as the Tigers welcome both Georgia and Tennessee to Baton Rouge. The Tigers will face Georgia on Fri. Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and will then square off with Tennessee on Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.
