Women's Tennis Loses in First Round of ITA All-Americans
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — The Lady Tigers’ Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman lost Thursday in their first match of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships to Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos of Vanderbilt, 8-1.
“It was their first national tournament and they were a little nervous,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Vandy played really tough.”
Seaman and Fantilli were ranked 38th in ITA’s fall preseason poll, but Thursday’s match was their first time this fall to compete together. They were one of just eleven teams in the nation selected to the tournament’s main draw.
Tsoubanos was part of last year’s doubles championship team in the tournament. “The thing about this tournament when you get to the main draw is that anyone you play is going to be really tough, and any time you get a win it’s big,” Minnis said.
Fantilli and Seaman will get a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow in the tournament’s consolation bracket.
