Men's Tennis Duo Advances at ITA All-American
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — LSU’s seventh-ranked doubles team of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley moved one step closer to the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Tournament title Thursday with an 8-1 win over Illinois’ Michael Calkins and Conner Murnigham at Chattanooga’s Champions Club.
It was the first match of the tournament for Fisher and Hazley. Calkins and Murningham were ranked 16th in the ITA fall preseason poll.
“Our guys played solid,” said LSU assistant coach Mark Booras. “They exploited some late misses by their opponents and were able to capitalize.”
Things will not get any easier for Fisher and Hazley. After Thursday, the second-largest tournament in college tennis will shrink to 16 doubles teams. The tournament began earlier this week with 128 of the nation’s best pairs.
Friday Fisher and Hazley face the winner of Friday’s match between Harvard’s 34th-ranked David Lingman and Mark Riddell and Duke’s 20th-ranked Ludovic Walter and Jason Zimmerman at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
Tomorrow’s will be a tough match either way,” Booras said. “They will have to be on top of their games.”
