Women's Golf Moves Up to Second Place

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The 26th-ranked LSU women’s golf team shot the day’s best round on a rainy, windy day on the New Mexico State University Golf Course to move into second place after 36 holes of the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate here Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers second round score of 14-over 302 was two strokes higher than Monday’s first round, but it was the best of the 16 teams in the tournament and allowed the Lady Tigers to cut Oklahoma’s advantage from seven to four shots entering the final round on Wednesday. LSU stands alone in second place at 602, 26-over par for 36 holes. Oklahoma, after a 5-over 293 on Monday, posted a 17-over 305 in the second round, but the Sooners are on top with a 36-hole total of 598, 22-over par.

Baylor and Texas Tech are tied for third at 28-over 604 with Florida State, one of the co-leaders on Monday, back to fifth at 29-over 605.

LSU’s Brooke Shelton followed Monday’s 75 with a 2-over 73 and stands in a group tied for third place in the individual competition at 4-over 148. She is two shots out of the lead of Christine Boucher of Kansas State and Kim Kolb of Texas Tech at 2-over 146.

Melissa Eaton, the LSU freshman from South Africa, made a big contribution to Tuesday’s round, following an opening 82 with a 1-over 73 to move from 69 to 33rd place at 11-over 155. LSU also counted 78s on the second day from sophomore Vicky Meyer and freshman Alexis Rather. Meyer is in a group tied for 12th at 7-over 151.

“It was really windy and rained half of the round,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “But we played some really strong golf. Melissa coming back to shoot 73 just shows how all five players are needed to work together and she came through like a trooper. We are in very good shape and look forward to the opportunity presented to us.”

LSU will be in the final grouping on Wednesday with Oklahoma and Baylor.
