Men's Golf in Sixth Place After Two Rounds

GLENVIEW, Ill. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a 4-over 580 on Monday in the first day of the Windon Memorial Classic at North Shore Country Club to stand in sixth place after two rounds.

The Tigers found themselves in second place after one round, only five shots behind Minnesota after firing an even-par 288 but followed that with a 4-over 292 in round two. West, a native of Dothan, Ala., fired consecutive rounds of 2-under 70 to finish the day in a tie for third place.

“We played pretty well today against a very strong field,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “All the guys did a good job today, especially Heath West, who really played great.”

“We need to play well again tomorrow to have a chance but I am very happy with our performance in the first two rounds today,” said Jones.

Minnesota, the 2002 NCAA champion, is leading the field after 36 holes at 5-under 571. Illinois is in second place at 2-under 574, Purdue is in third place at 1-over 577, and host Northwestern and Toledo are tied for fourth at 3-over 579. Purdue’s Peter Richardson fired a 9-under 135 to enter the final round as the leading individual.

Junior Brandon Aydlett is tied for 29th place at 3-over 147. The Monroe, La., native fired a career-low 1-under 71 in round two. Andrew Lanahan shot a 4-over 148 and is tied for 33rd place. Junior Jeff Riemann shot a 5-over 149 and is in a tie for 37th place with teammate Garrett Prather.

The final round will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. LSU will take a week off before participating in the Gary Koch Intercollegiate on Oct. 20-21 in Tampa, Fla.
