Men's Tennis Advances Two on First Day of ITA All-Americans
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Two Tigers won two rounds on the first day of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American tournament Friday at the Champions Club in Chattanooga. Ken Skupski and Danny Bryan handily defeated their opponents to advance to tomorrow’s round of 128.
Skupski’s first victim was Chad Tsuda of Colorado. He beat Tsuda, 6-2, 6-2, before beating Santa Clara’s Taylor Bedilion, 6-1, 6-1. Bryan battled back after the first set to beat Arkansas-Little Rock’s Dave Baxendine, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. He won his next match against Butler’s Andy Bartish, 6-4, 6-3.
“The guys who won did really well,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “They took advantage of their opponents mistakes and were able to capitalize.”
Freshman Colt Gaston lost his first match to Goren Spanner of Virginia Tech, 6-1, 6-2. Teammate Brandon Nicholson fell to Marten Schultz, also of Va. Tech, 6-4, 6-2.
Tomorrow’s matches will be tougher for Skupski and Bryan. Bryan takes on Florida State’s Jonathan Sucupira and Skupsi plays in-state rival Amanjot Singh of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Gaston and Nicholson will get a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow in the first round of doubles action. Bryan and Nicholson team up in the first round. The duo of Gaston and Skupsi earned a bye.
