Smith Breaks Own School Record; LSU 5th at Nike Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Junior standout Stephanie Smith broke her own school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle by more than four seconds to win the event at the 2002 Nike Cup to highlight a pair of fifth-place team finishes on the final day of the invitational on Saturday.

LSU did not send its diving teams to the competition in order to allow them to complete a dual meet against Auburn at the Minnesota Diving Invitational this weekend. Therefore, the men’s team finished with 360.5 points and in fifth place of nine teams, while the women finished with 359 points and in fifth place of 10 teams. Host North Carolina won both the men’s (757) and women’s (959) competitions.

Smith, a native of Metairie, La., and Honorable Mention All-American in 2002, finished the 1,650 freestyle in 16:21.41 to break the school record of 16:25.47 which she set at the NCAA Championships in March of 2002 in Austin, Texas. With the NCAA “A” cut qualifying mark, Smith will have a chance to repeat her All-America status at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala., from March 20-22.

Elsewhere, LSU’s Francisco Paez finished second in the super final of the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 44.69, an NCAA “B” cut qualifying time. Lady Tiger Cissy Schepens also had an NCAA “B” cut time in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke as she finished second in 2:16.95.

In relay action, LSU’s men’s team of Paez, Chris Stanczyk, Martin Latz and Jan Minartz finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:01.12, while the women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Donna Leslie, Julie Johnson, Laura Jo Leininger and Heather Brand finished sixth in 3:29.42.
