XC Teams Travel to NCAA Central Regional in Waco
BATON ROUGE — LSU’s men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Waco, Texas Saturday for the 2002 NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Baylor University.
The meet will be ran at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course with the women running a 6K course beginning at 9 a.m. and the men following with 10K race at 10 a.m. The top-two teams plus the top four individuals not on a qualifying team from each of the six regional meets around the country will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. An additional 13 teams plus two at-large competitors will earn a trip to the national meet.
LSU will look to improve on its team finishes from a year ago as the men placed ninth and the women finished 11th overall. Sophomores Andrew Huston and Tomario Thomas will likely pace the men’s squad as they were the Tigers’ top-two finishers at the SEC Championships two weeks ago. The Lady Tigers will be lead by freshman Michelle Hymel and sophomore Katie Denton who each finished among LSU’s top-three at the conference meet.
Following the NCAA Regional meet, the 2002 cross country season will come to a conclusion Mon., Nov. 25 in Terra Haute, Ind. as Indiana State plays host to the NCAA Championships.
