GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Amassing identical team totals of 229 points the LSU cross country teams came away from the 2002 SEC Championships with an eighth place finish on the men’s side and a ninth place showing on the women’s side Monday at the UF Golf Course.

Perennial powerhouse Arkansas swept the meet’s team honors as the men won their 29th straight conference title (31 points) and the Lady Razorbacks took home their sixth straight SEC crown (39). Alabama (52) and Florida (76) rounded out the men’s top-three, while Kentucky (78) and Tennessee (86) stayed in the medal count on the women’s side.

Individually, Alabama’s David Kimani led the men’s field with a meet-winning time of 24:05.18. LSU’s top-two finishers, Andrew Huston and Tomario Thomas, were separated by less then a second on the 8K course to finish 41st and 42nd, respectively, with times of 27:20.38 and 27:21.86. Other Tiger contributing to the team score included Roland LaBlanc (27:39.88), Jarrett Roche (27:47.67) and Ben Shumaker (28:03.38).

Arkansas’ Christin Wurth took home the women’s individual title winning the 6K race with a time of 21:04.87. As expected senior Marian Burnett paced the Lady Tigers finishing with a team-best 22:48.52 clocking to place 26th overall. Michelle Hymel was the next LSU runner to cross the finish line concluding the race with a time of 23:46.25. Katie Denton (23:59.94), Sandra Smith (24:33.48) and Katrina Flanders (25:09.42) also contributed to the team score for LSU.

The LSU cross country team will return to action Sat., Nov. 16 when it travels to Waco, Texas for the 2002 NCAA Regional Championships.
