Lady Tigers Golfers Take on Elite Field in 'The Derby'
AUBURN, Ala. — The nation’s top five women’s collegiate golf teams and seven of the country’s top 10 join LSU in the Lady Tigers final event of the fall season, the ninth annual “The Derby Invitational” presented by Pursell Technologies starting Friday at Auburn’s University Club.
The Lady Tigers are coming off an 11th place showing last week at Furman, shooting their best scores of the season. The Tigers will go with the same lineup as last week with senior Erin Sarver, juniors Devon Day and Isabel Dornellas, sophomore Brooke Shelton and freshman Rebecca Struthers. The prep state champion of Louisiana from Baton Rouge had rounds of 76 and 75 during her opening tournament. Shelton, an honorable mention All-SEC selection a year ago, finished in a tie for 14th last week after shooting 73-73-77.
The field for The Derby besides LSU and host fourth-ranked Auburn includes: top-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 2 Vandy, No. 3 Arizona and No. 5 Duke. Also in the event are Southern California, Texas, Florida, Georgia Tennessee, South Carolina and TCU.
The 54-hole tournament, which runs through Sunday, will be played on the University Club course at Auburn, a par-72, 6,262-yard layout. LSU has two previous wins in the tournament in 1995 and 1996 and a second place finish in the event in 1997.
